Your vote matters because school board members do an important job – a job that helps determine the quality of education Austin’s students receive. Among other things, they are responsible for ensuring that the superintendent and AISD administrators:
Help, don’t harm, students.
Provide all students, with the right conditions for meaningful learning.
Address the needs of students who are homeless or at risk for suicide and take decisive action to reduce the risk for school violence.
Provide parents, teachers, students and the community-at-large with meaningful opportunities to engage in planning for the education of children in Austin’s public schools.
Also, school board members must be willing to ask the superintendent and school administrators hard questions about their actions and decisions as they related to the AISD’s own policies and to demand honest, accurate, timely and well-documented answers. In other words, your school board is responsible for a lot more than just hiring and firing a superintendent and approving an annual budget for the AISD.
