Key Responsibilities of the Texas Education Agency
The Texas Education Agency or TEA is responsible for overseeing the education of public school students in the state and for complying with all of the rules and legislation that apply to education in Texas. The agency’s leadership includes the Commissioner of Education, who is appointed by the Governor BUT is to be consented to by each Texas State Senator before they are employed or continue their employment by the State as the commissioner of education, and the State Board of Education.
Some of the most important responsibilities of the TEA are:
Serve and assist (not bully or dictate to) communities, school districts and their schools in order to help them meet the needs of their students and improve student and school-wide achievement levels, not focus just on state-mandated test scores.
Make certain that ISDs are serving students by making effective use of taxpayers’ dollars and that ISDs know how their money is being spent.
Provide ISD board members, administrators, teachers, and campus intervention teams as well as parents and community members with training and technical support in order to help them work together to prevent student suicides and school violence, minimize discipline problems, resolve conflict and improve student and school achievement.
Provide a statewide “best practice” clearinghouse so that ISDs, schools and communities can improve the achievement of their students by learning about what works based on the experiences of others.
